What is Japanese traditional dance?
Japanese traditional dances have a long history. There are many kinds of dances. Especially, the part of the dance performed in KABUKI is called “Japanese traditional dance”. Not only the Kabuki actors but also the general public are familiar with “Japanese traditional dance” through lessons.
2 types of body movements
“Japanese traditional dance” has 2 types of body movements, “MAI” and “ODORI”.
“MAI” is transmitted from “Noh”, and “ODORI” is transmitted from “KABUKI”.
“MAI” combines relatively simple movements with shuffling and quick movements such as moving on the stage quickly. The origin of dance is to dedicate it to God. The beauty of the old dance remains in “Japanese traditional dance”.
On the other hand, “ODORI”, which was born from Kabuki, has dramatic movements such as raising legs, turning legs and so on.
Traditional and Creation
Through about 400 years, “Japanese traditional dance” has a variety of faces, such as “Kabuki dance” derived from Kabuki, “KAMIGATA-MAI” and “KYO-MAI” which have the tradition of dance of the parlor, and “creative dances” which is aimed for a new creation.
